We’ve had a chilly start to the year here in DC, with temps hovering around the freezing mark or below for many days thus far. With the help of Danish family, some great summer sales on Scandinavian merino wool layers - and lots of trial and error - these are my tips to maximize that vital outdoor time at an outdoor or half-outdoor Waldorf or other school, your back yards, the park - or even just a long walk in your neighborhood!

Ultimate guide to Scandinavian layering for winter:
Anything under 45 degrees Fahrenheit my kids are wearing something like:
• a base wool layer - we love Joha, Danish brand that you can find on good sales on babyshop in January (yes right now!) and in summertime!
*While I import things on sale and spend a little extra on shipping ($20 ish) 1-2 times a year, one can also find similar stateside. That being said, I find it can actually be pricier here if you factor in the heavy Danish sales 😅
Here’s an example of a USA-based option on Amazon - by trusted brand Woolino
A polyester option that we have not tried, but might be a good base layer with a smaller budget!
Another wool layer option on Amazon
• a fleece layer if it’s seriously freezing outside, or if little man is going to be going to school which is heavy on outdoor play (sledding, forest hikes etc) in 30 degree weather
This Reima option is nice
• a snowsuit if it’s under 40 degrees or it’s windy and damp
This option from Kuling is amazing, and you can find it on multiple Danish or American sites - often on sale. Many colors too! My one year old rocks the cherry version
Polarn O. Pyret - this snowsuit is a gold standard for Waldorf outdoor-heavy schools / pricey but wait for a sale and get a size up to get two years out of it!
• a thermal suit if it’s 45 or up and we don’t feel like slogging a snowsuit around! (These temps are approximate / we feel the temp outside and go when something extra warm if our son is going to school, or will be outside for an extended period of time.)
Our favorite thermo suits are by the brands Wheat, or Mikk-Line - both available on the scandi sites listed below! You can find them on super sale from time to time if you sign up for email updates. I like to buy at least one size up to have them last for two years - while they’ll be large the first year, they’re easy to roll up.
Favorite Scandi websites for baby gear - sign up to hear about sales, which again, can be substantial.
