Great playground near Petworth in NW DC

One of our favorite little playgrounds near Petworth is the Playground at the Parks, near the new developments at Walter Reed. It’s ten minutes drive for us, and well worth the little trip. Off to the west side of Georgia Ave NW & Butternut St NW, pull onto Bhtternut and park just adjacent to the back of the playground (I always find a spot) as I’ve never seen it crowded.

The playground has swings, a perfectly nice, contained, and relatively clean sand box area, climbing structures for older kids - and a lovely little faux grass hill with a slide on it (my three year old prefers to slide down the hill himself) Everything is new and well-cared for, and there’s a fire station behind it on Georgia so kids can even see fire trucks from the playground as well.

Our MO for this playground is to show up with a couple of construction vehicles to play in the sand with - the baby chills in the baby swing, they both get energy out on the astroturf hill - and then we hit Whole Foods across the block for a snack or a little food shopping. The Parks has a cute area outside of Whole Foods with a fountain and chairs I plan on frequenting when it’s warmer as well!

These are my son’s construction picks!

  1. This steel dump truck is solid, functional and loads of fun (get it)

  2. His excavator is a little tricky technically to dig with under 3.5 I imagine (have to use two hands to lift and dig etc) but it’s still a blast for all ages - I don’t see it on Amazon at the moment but this front loader would also do the trick!
